After years of hard work, Louis Tomlinson’s debut album was written from the heart, embracing his love of Britpop and indie. Walls celebrates its fifth anniversary today, so we’re shining our spotlight on five big songs from the album!
Two of Us
The lead single from the record, Two of Us is about Louis’ late mother, Johannah. Louis described his writing as therapeutic and empowering. He told Radio 1, “I don’t want people to get caught up in the sadness… The song should be hopeful.”
Kill My Mind
Paying homage to the acts Louis loves, from Arctic Monkeys to Sam Fender, opening track Kill My Mind is an indie-rock anthem. An ode to the joy of youth, he wanted the video to be a nod to Oasis’ ramshackle performances. Playing to a packed pit of bouncing bodies, our kid did alright.
Walls
The album’s title track and final single, Walls maps the painful aftermath of a breakup. The lyrics explore learning from your mistakes and coming back stronger. Louis took inspiration for the track from his favourite Oasis classics, even going so far as to credit Noel Gallagher as a songwriter!
We Made It
We Made It combines a love story with an ode to Louis’ fans, detailing his early days in One Direction where he says he struggled to find his place. With Walls, Louis found his sound. The album was a top ten hit in the UK and US, and has been certified gold in five countries around the world.
Don’t Let It Break Your Heart
A soaring and anthemic take on moving forwards, Louis described Don’t Let it Break Your Heart as “a song about hope and seeing the glass as half full.” After spending several years making the record, pulling from personal experience, his message forms the heart of Walls, and still resonates five years later.
