Office Stereo – Five Iconic Anniversaries!

January 30, 2025

Another year older, another circle around the sun. We’re kicking off the new year by looking ahead at some big birthdays on the horizon. The weather outside might be miserable, the evenings still dark, but we’ve found a reason to celebrate! On the office stereo this month, we’re shining our spotlight on five massive, iconic anniversaries for 2025.

Whitney Houston – How Will I Know

Turning 40 this year, this bright kick of a kitsch ‘80s pop hit was originally penned for Janet Jackson, before being passed over to Whitney Houston. At the time, Whitney had an innocent, girl next door image – the song’s backing vocals were even sung by her mother, Cissy Houston! The third single from her self-titled debut album, it became her second US number one. Released in November 1985, in the years since it’s been certified platinum in five countries, including twice in the US! How could she know it’d be such a smash?!

TLC – Waterfalls

Celebrating its thirtieth birthday this year, Waterfalls has become one of TLC’s biggest songs after topping charts around the world. The socially-conscious lyrics juxtapose with the song’s light pulse of RnB and relaxed delivery. The video, which cuts between the group performing amidst aqua backdrops and dramatisations of the lyrics, won TLC four VMAs. Released in the UK in July 1995, it was the third single from their second album CrazySexyCool. While the song’s message encourages exercising caution, it’s clear TLC chased their dreams to the top. Since its release, the song has been certified platinum in six countries and continues to collect accolades, from Time Out’s 50 Best ’90s Songs to Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Craig David – Fill Me In

The lead single from his debut album Born to Do It, Fill Me In was also Craig David’s debut single, topping the UK charts in April 2000. Turning twenty-five this year, the song tells the story of the girl next door and her suspicious parents. Produced by Mark Hill, one half of UK garage duo Artful Dodger, the track balances their two-step beats with Craig’s smooth RnB vocals. It also features a sample of an Artful Dodger rework of British pop-rock band BBMak’s 2000 single, Still on Your Side. The 10th best-selling single of 2000, it’s since been certified platinum in the UK. Someone fill Craig in immediately!

P!NK – F*ckin Perfect

P!NK’s empowering pop rock power ballad turns fifteen this year, but her message still feels as vital. Originally writing about her husband, the song’s meaning shifted to include her fans and young girls everywhere. Released in December 2010 as the second single from her Greatest Hits… So Far!!! collection, it was a top ten smash in the US and won her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Solo Performance. Written and recorded with Swedish powerhouse producers Max Martin and Shellback, the track was covered a year later in an episode of Glee. Certified platinum in five countries including the US, it’s a song that lives up to its title.

Meghan Trainor – Dear Future Husband

Going double digits this March, Meghan’s ode to chivalry and romance is a nostalgic shot of a doo-wop pop bop. One of her earliest hits, it was originally shared on her debut EP Title, before being included on her debut record of the same name. The music video, a 1950s style kitsch cut, guest stars Charlie Puth as the man she chooses. She later returned the favour by duetting on his debut single Marvin Gaye. The song has been certified platinum in nine countries, including three times over in the US. Meghan’s call was answered just three years after the single came out when she tied the knot with American actor Daryl Sabara. What a difference a decade can make!
