THIS WEEK IN ROCK

July 14, 2019

Record-setting chart placings, bans, classic festival sets and a thoroughly decent proposal. This week’s rock history as it happened.

#OnThisDay July 8, 1971:
Oops! The Royal Albert Hall slaps a temporary ban on rock gigs after fans cause damage to two boxes during a Mott The Hoople gig there. The band coughs up £1467 in damages.

#OnThisDay July 9, 2010:
How’s this for romance? Carlos Santana proposes to his girlfriend, Cindy Blackman, after she finishes a drum solo during a Santana gig at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre in Tinley Park, IL. They marry in December 2010.

#OnThisDay July 10, 1999:
Talk about being in-demand! Manic Street Preachers make their third appearance in six years at the T In The Park festival, which has moved from Strathclyde Country Park to Balado Airfield, Kinross.

#OnThisDay July 11, 1978:
Arguably their greatest single, The Clash’s ‘(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais’ reaches No. 32 in the UK singles chart. Despite its modest chart position, the single is ranked No. 8 in the NME’s Tracks of the Year at the close of 1978, while Uncut magazine later rated it the band’s best song in 2004.

#OnThisDay July 12, 1969:
One-hit wonders Zager And Evans start a six-week residency at the top of the US charts with ‘In The Year 2525 (Exordium And Terminus)’. It also reached No. 1 in the UK charts, thus making them the only one-hit wonders to have reached pole position on both sides of the Atlantic.

#OnThisDay July 13, 1985:
Taking the stage at just after 1pm, Adam Ant is the fourth act to wow the crowds at the Wembley Stadium leg of Live Aid with this dynamite version of ‘Vive Le Rock’.

#OnThisDay July 14, 1990:
About to approach its eight month in the UK album charts, The Stranglers’ compilation, ‘Greatest Hits 1977 – 1990’ is still riding in the Top 20.
