Although ‘I Drove All Night’ was originally written for Roy Orbison – he eventually scored a posthumous hit in 1992 after he recorded his version in 1987 – it was Cyndi Lauper who took the song Top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic in 1989.
Part of the single’s success must be down to this visually stunning video, which was co-directed by Lauper with the late Scott Kalvert, who found later success directing Leonardo DiCaprio in ‘The Basketball Diaries’.
Alternating between colour and black & white, brimming with fifties imagery and design icons, Lauper uses her striking image to create a visual effect that’s more than a match for her amazing vocal performance.
