We could argue forever about whether it’s the singer or the song. But there are some singers, and some songs, that simply settle the matter.
It was Leonard Cohen who sat banging his head on the floor of the Royalton Hotel, working out one of his eighty lyrical drafts.
But in the finest tradition of swansongs (see also Johnny Cash and ‘Hurt’) it is, tragically, Buckley we think of when we hear the sacred chords.
Recorded for Buckley’s ‘Grace’ album, and only released as a single ten years after his death, the video is a simple, sepia tinted set of studio footage. There’s not much to see here.
Just the singer. And the song.
