Originally appearing on Johnny Cash’s 1969 album, ‘At San Quentin’, this song was written by humorist and poet Shel Silverstein.
It went on to become the biggest US hit of the Man In Black’s career as it crossed over from the country to the mainstream charts.
This clip, taken from ‘The Johnny Cash TV Show’, finds Cash in rollicking good form as he performs to an eager and appreciative audience.
As with so many of Cash’s songs, the good humour that drives the performance is tempered by a darkness that deals with adult themes. But for all that, it’s impossible to keep a straight face throughout.
