There are whole variety of reasons why Shakin’ Stevens was the biggest-selling singles star of the 1980s.
While it’s undeniable that by tapping into the bygone age of rock’n’roll’s first seismic flash he evoked a sense of nostalgia, what also counted in his favour was a simplicity that rightly aimed squarely below the neck.
This wasn’t music for contemplation, but for dancing. And so it went with his videos.
This is Shaky in fine, hip-swivellin’ mood and so it proves that when the music is this good, then the moves are all you need. ‘Oh Julie’ was his third UK No. 1 and it topped the charts in January 1982.
