This memorable and iconic video for the title track from The Clash’s third album was only the second promo to be shot by director Don Letts.
Amazingly, it’s the result of a number of happy accidents.
Filmed at the Festival Pier in Battersea, the shoot was originally scheduled for the daytime, but a combination of inexperience and negotiating the tides of the Thames ensured that things ran over beyond sunset.
The inclement weather proved lucky and added to the atmosphere while The Clash – dressed in Crombies, dark suits and hats – had never looked cooler.
