VIDEO OF THE WEEK: Blue Oyster Cult – ‘(Don’t Fear) The Reaper’

March 4, 2017

It’s high time that Blue Oyster Cult’s 1976 smash, ‘(Don’t Fear) The Reaper’, was reclaimed from the realms of the sketch show and recognised as the enduring classic that it so obviously is.

Powered and underpinned by one of the most memorable riffs ever committed to vinyl, this is 70s rock music at its very best. Hook laden, melodic and one of those all-too-rare instances where rock crosses over from its natural constituency and seduces the mainstream with making concessions to either party.

It’s all there – an earworm of a riff, lyrics that resonate on different levels and multi-layered production.

And cowbell. Lots and lots of cowbell.
