VIDEO OF THE WEEK: The Clash – ‘Tommy Gun’

October 20, 2017

The first single from the criminally underrated ‘Give ‘Em Enough Rope’ album, ‘Tommy Gun’ was aggressively political even by The Clash’s acerbic standards.

Released in November ’78, ‘Tommy Gun’ served as an early attempt to address media complicity in terrorist agendas, with coverage of atrocities serving as potent recruiting tools.

Machine-gun snare hits and distorted guitars mesh with bitingly sarcastic lyrics – “I’m cutting out your picture from page one/I’m gonna get a jacket just like yours/And give my false support to your cause/Whatever you want, you’re gonna get it!”

Strummer was singing of the likes of Baader-Meinhof and The Red Brigade. Sadly, the lyrics are no less potent today.
