Without a shadow of a doubt, David Essex’s ‘Rock On’ is hands down one of the weirdest tracks to have graced the UK Top 10, where it remained for 11 – count ‘em – weeks.
Released in 1973 here David Essex seems to have inadvertently invented the sub-genre of dub-glam and this is thanks, in part, to Jeff Wayne’s stunning production.
Mixing layers of bass guitars with the sweeping string sounds emerging from Philadelphia’s soul scene, the song’s lyrics are both a celebration and caution of the joys and perils of rock’n’roll.
‘Rock On’ also featured in Essex’s 1973 hard-hitting movie, ‘That’ll Be The Day’, a film that has weathered the years remarkably well.
