May 31, 2017

May was a month for perfectly crafted guitar pop to make its way onto wax. One set of undeniable classics from the exquisitely coiffured and moustachioed Daryl Hall & John Oates, and another from the virtuoso guitar and silky voice of John Mayer.

John Mayer’s debut full length album and the beginning of a meteoric ascent from Berkeley College dropout to arena filling superstar. The 14 irresistible pop songs, nuanced by John’s undisputed guitar skills, include singles ‘No Such Thing’ and the Grammy Award-winning ‘Your Body Is A Wonderland’.

Pressed onto 2 sides of 180g black vinyl, there’s no better way to appreciate John’s masterful grasp on modern pop song-writing. Oh and if you’ve not seen John perform the acoustic version of ‘Neon’, we highly recommend it!

John Mayer – ‘Heavier Things’

VINYL ROUND-UP: MAY

ORDER HERE

‘Heavier Things’, the follow up to ‘Room for Squares’, finds Mayer more assured in his songwriting, a confidence that comes across with particular emphasis on the album’s soulful numbers. ‘Heavier Things’ see Mayer building on his on his earlier sound, adding weight with loops and horns.

This developed style is most evident on singles and album openers ‘Clarity’ and ‘Bigger Than My Body’. A perfect album for those relaxed summer days, but it’s worth noting that even John himself questions “Am I the only one who finds this record creepy to make out to?”
