SIX VAN MORRISON COVERS
April 27, 2018
With Van Morrison’s new album, ‘You’re Driving Me Crazy’ (incredibly his 39th studio release) out today, we’ve rounded up six memorable covers of the great man’s work.
That’s ‘memorable’ for all sorts of reasons…
Patti Smith Group – ‘Gloria’
A cover version in the loosest possible terms, here the Patti Smith Group jettisons the lyrics of the original (bar the chorus) and reinvents the song for the punk generation. Its combination of profane and overt sexuality makes for a sinfully unbeatable experience.
Busted – ‘Brown Eyed Girl’
This rendition sucks the joy from Van The Man’s to such a whopping degree that it could be used to raise the Titanic from the ocean floor.
The Masquerade Singer – ‘Have I Told You Lately That I Love You’
Admittedly, we could’ve gone either way with this one but compared to Rod Stewart’s bloodless reading, you know that the Brazilian karaoke singer and YouTube star The Masquerade Singer is coming from the right place. Even if the mask is, well, creepy…
Dexys Midnight Runners – ‘Jackie Wilson Said’
Reinventing themselves as a Celtic soul revue, it made sense for this incarnation of Dexys Midnight Runners to look to Van Morrison for inspiration. The third single from ‘Too-Rye-Ay’, it went Top 5 in 1982.
Ted Nugent – ‘Gloria’
We all know about the Nuge’s fondness for guns, but did he really have to blast this song to bits?
Aled Jones – ‘Whenever God Shines His Light’
Stick with this version til the end and you’ll be converted. To Satanism.
A combination of Jazz and Blues standards and fresh re-interpretations of classic cuts from his own back catalogue, ‘You’re Driving Me Crazy’ sees Van collaborating with Grammy-nominated jazz organist, trumpeter and vocalist Joey DeFrancesco.
