VIDEO SPOTLIGHT: Depeche Mode – ‘Strangelove’
February 16, 2017
The first single from the game-changing ‘Music For The Masses’ (re-released on vinyl this month) ‘Strangelove’s brooding synth and dissonant vocals set the tone for much of Depeche Mode’s future output.
This was reflected in the promo video, a dark, moody black and white affair directed by Anton Corbijn.
Shot at various locations around Paris, the band solemnly intone the lyrics in between a series of fast cuts and avant garde shots of models in underwear (one of whom was Corbijn’s girlfriend).
The latter element was a bit much for MTV in the US, and the models were edited out for the channel Stateside.
In an unusual twist, a second video was shot a year later, this time directed by Martyn Atkins and featuring the band performing in Senate House, London.
Looking back, the dark solemnity of the video seems unusual by today’s arch-knowing standards. But it’s a useful reminder that, not long ago, there was no shame in taking yourself seriously.
